Career and occupations
This is what I've done for a living, paid or not. At present I'm mostly centred on systems administration and identity management.
More than thirty years of hard and active work deserve a table of contents.

Study history and academic degrees
Brought up in catholic schools, from age 8 up to 17 (1979) in St. Estanislao School in Málaga, run by Jesuit priests, but in the days when Spain was transitioning from dictatorship into democracy, so they were not as strict as they used to be in the first half of the 20th century, but strict enough to teach a good sense for self discipline and a taste for perfection, really for a sane tendency to it.
- 1973 - 1977
- English Certificate at the Málaga School of Languages. This qualifies for teaching English.
- 1979 - 1986
Medical School in Málaga. Graduated summa cum laude with the small thesis "Diseño de un paquete informático para el tratamiento de los estudios caso-control".

- Intern at the Anatomy Department in the School of Medicine.

- Intern at the Biostatistics Department in the School of Medicine.
- 2011
- After three false starts since 1987, due to many reasons, I have found a PhD theme that combines my main line of work at present -identity and privacy in the electronic world- and my academic background -medicine-, resulting in "A Secure and Distributed Infrastructure for Health Record Access".
Regular paid job history
- 1986
- Basic, Pascal, COBOL and FORTRAN teacher at private centre in Málaga.
- 1987
- Intern for Junta de Andalucía "Plan de formación del personal informático" at University of Málaga Data Centre.
- 1987 - 1989
- Programmer for the University of Málaga Data Centre. Assigned to a secondary unit dedicated to accounting and administration.
Main job: design and implementation of the user interface for the University accounting system.
Secondary tasks: administration and operation of the small data centre, that included the main node for the local campus area network, one of the first Ethernets in the University and the connection to the main campus over X.25 lines. The network was then running DECnet and during this period was connected to the just created RICA Andalusian regional Research and Educational Network and to the incipient Spanish Internet.
- 1989 - 1990
- Support technician for the computer laboratory in the department of Languages and Computational Sciences of Málaga University.
Main job: System administration of several VMS based systems and designing the resource assignment for users for research and educational tasks, integration in the campus DECnet based Ethernet network and configuration of the first mail system for the Computer Science School.
Secondary tasks: Running the microcomputing laboratory with other four people.
- 1990 - 1995
Systems manager for the "Universidad Internacional Deportiva de Andalucía" (UNISPORT). This was the first non university institution to become part of RICA, mostly thanks to my personal involvement in that network during my previous assignments.
Main task: Systems administration of the site network, computers and databases and their connection to the videotext network. It is important to note that at this position I set up one of the first web servers in Spain in 1993.
Secondary task: Management of all technical installations in the building, from electricity supply through the telephone network.
Extra tasks: Translation and review of translations of technical and medical papers and doing presentations about ICT in sports environments.
- 1995 - 1996
- Technical director of project "Acceso Fácil '95" funded by the (now extinct) Instituto de la Pequeña y Mediana Empresa Industrial part of the (then) Spanish Ministry of Industry. The main ojective of the project was to introduce Internet to 300 SMEs in Málaga and Granada Spanish provinces. This was the most funded project in 1995.
- 1995 - 2001
- Programmer in the Systems and Communications area of the Central ICT Services of the University of Málaga.
Main task: System administration of VMS, Unix and Linux systems running the core network services for the University, including: DNS, e-mail, web, ftp, terminal access, directories, etc.
Secondary task: Design of new services and architecting the evolution of existing ones.
Extra tasks: Liaising with the task forces of the Spanish Research and Educational Network Community.
- 2002 - 2016
- Systems and Telematic Services Manager for the University of Málaga.
Main tasks: Lead a team of seven people that manage the systems that run core services for the University: five SAN organised in two fabrics, blade systems, virtualisation services, e-mail, directory, Jabber, corporate and departmental web services, identity management, back-end support databases, videoconferencing, media streaming, etc. Also, design and evolve said systems and services and new ones. One of the main tasks is designing the identity infrastructure for the University.
Secondary tasks: Support other units and departments that require services related to our main tasks, like, for example, live broadcast of events.
Extra tasks: Liaise with the communities in Research and Educational Networks and other bodies at regional, national and international levels. Take care of guided visits to the data centre for students in secondary and vocational schools. Update the personnel in the ICT services about new developments in my area of expertise.
